Casualty 24/7
Casualty 24/7 is an entertaining documentary series filmed inside Barnsley Hospital’s Emergency department. It’s an exclusive look at how the staff deal with the unpredictability of never knowing what they’re going to be faced with next.

Episode 1
It’s Monday at Barnsley Casualty, traditionally the busiest day of the week and they’re expecting to treat 277 patients. But it soon becomes clear that this shift could break the hospital record of 349 patients, a number that no-one wants to beat.

Episode 2
Freezing fog has descended across the whole of South Yorkshire so Barnsley Casualty is inundated with weather-related accidents and emergencies.

Episode 3
After eight weeks off with a fractured hip, Consultant Dr Julian Humphrey returns to work at Barnsley Casualty. A keen cyclist, he came off his bike in Sheffield and by his own admission is ‘a bit accident prone – I’m the NHS secret shopper.’

Episode 4
It’s a busy day in Barnsley Hospital’s casualty department and one that holds a special significance for Nurse Jade Melia - it’s her last shift.

Episode 5
Sister Jane Hawksworth is managing the ambulance arrivals, ‘It’s so unpredictable and you can have the worst day ever and think nothing can compare to it and then come back and have another worst day ever. And then gradually the days will get better.’

Episode 6
It’s another busy shift at Barnsley Hospital’s casualty department. Sister Jane Hawksworth is delighted to receive a delivery of chocolates from a grateful patient and shares them with the team.

Episode 7
We spend an eventful night shift with Barnsley Hospital’s casualty team. The department is already busy when Paramedics rush in 74-year-old Barry who’s struggling to breathe.

Episode 8
A busy night shift at Barnsley Hospital’s Casualty Department has left the new team clocking on with an abundance of patients and a shortage of beds.

Episode 9
Paramedics bring in Gary, a 28-year-old who came off his motorbike at 40 mph. However, injuries he sustained a few days earlier are of as much concern to Consultant Dr Rob Jones.

Episode 10
At Barnsley Casualty staff clocking on are having problems logging on – the computer patient system has crashed and so they must resort to old school methods – wheeling out a whiteboard to track where everyone is.

Episode 11
When Barnsley Hospital’s emergency red phone rings Sister Benita Wainwright takes the most critical of emergency calls – a patient is in cardiac arrest. Doctor George Kay leads the resus team, and Lead Nurse Hannah Ryan steps in to head up the nurses.

Episode 12
Paramedics rush in 94-year-old Doris, who has a gaping wound on her leg after an incident with a stair-lift. Leading her care is Consultant Doctor John Raynor who says, ‘in the grand scheme of these wounds, this is probably the worst one I’ve ever seen.’
