My Generation

Nikita Khrushchev’s (public) reckoning with the politics of Joseph Stalin created a political sensation. Is Nikita Khrushchev the true prophet of perestroika - or just the guardian of an inhuman system? Was he a great leader or just a bumbling peasant who stumbled into the top spot of the superpower’s hierarchy? At the time, the entire world was fascinated by this Russian. Khrushchev was an ardent Stalinist for many years yet it is he who managed to forever end the terror and persecutions of his predecessor. The Soviet head of state sought détente between the systems. But what remains is the memory of a shoe he banged on a table during the UN General Assembly. His professed goal was the peaceful coexistence of socialism and capitalism yet he drove the world to the edge of nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Khrushchev ordered the freeing of the last German prisoners of war - and was also responsible for the building of the Wall. He was a reformer who was defeated by the system but - above all - also by himself. Stalin’s reign of terror, World War II, the de-Stalinization movement of the 50s, rapprochement but also the most serious crises of the Cold War - all this is closely associated with Nikita Khrushchev.

One Small Step: Neil Armstrong

In 2016, a historic moment arrived when Barack Obama spoke in Cuba to the inhabitants of the island nation and promised a future together. For the first time in more than 50 years, an American president had entered the communist country and turned towards an erstwhile enemy. However, the US economic embargo against Cuba continues. It sanctions the socialist state – although the UN General Assembly recently again called it a violation of international law. Many Cubans are therefore sceptical about a new political future, despite the friendly words of the American President. Their distrust is deep. It is based on over fifty years of history and the policies of the United States towards their country. For years, the Cuban government has raised serious allegations against their big neighbour. The film "Operation Peter Pan" tracks these allegations.

Operation Peter Pan - The Secret War Against Cuba

Just after midnight on May 2, 2011, United States Special Forces raided the compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where Osama Bin laden had been hiding for years. “America’s public enemy number one” was killed during the operation. The Navy SEALs thoroughly searched his house, recovering everything that could provide information about Bin Laden and his terrorist network Al-Qaeda: His documents and private correspondence, as well as every electronic data carrier. Analysts from the CIA and other US secret services immediately started working on evaluating these “Bin Laden-papers”. In America’s War on Terrorism, any detail mattered and could hold clues to the enemy’s character and to the threat that Al-Qaeda still posed. In May of 2015, the „Office of the Director of National Intelligence” made available to the public parts of the recovered “Bin Laden-papers”. This documentary analyzes these materials, allowing new perspectives on the terrorist leader, on the story of his life; especially on the private life, he led in his last years. The man spent those years in Abbottabad with hardly any freedom of movement. His compound in Abbottabad, which was apparently supposed to offer him safety from the Americans, was a kind of prison – albeit one that he chose for himself. It is where Bin Laden lived with most of his family. Bin Laden’s sphere of influence was extremely limited; he was left with hardly anything but his computer – for security reasons there was no internet and no telephone. Osama Bin Laden read a lot and followed the news via TV and BBC-Radio. Couriers had to deliver his messages to the outside world in envelopes and on USB thumb drives. As a leader and symbolic figure, however, he still played a major role – to his followers as well as to his enemies.

Mysterious castles overlooking lonely lakes, and men in kilts playing the bagpipes; whiskey, and the Loch Ness monster: everybody is familiar with the clichés about Scotland. What few people realise, however, is that Great Britain‘s northernmost region also contains fascinating countryside and wildlife. Some of the biggest seabird colonies of Europe are in Scotland. The abundance of fish here also benefits the otters and ospreys who have returned to their Scottish hunting grounds in recent years. Spectacular aerial footage captures the beauty of the Highlands and some of the islands here: there are more than 500 of them in total. With the help of highly stabilised cameras and experienced pilots who have worked on the Harry Potter productions, we celebrate the overall charm of the Scottish landscape.

The Mona Lisa is the world's most famous painting. But what secrets lie underneath the canvas? This extraordinary film unveils a mystery and astonishing revelations.

Secrets of the Mona Lisa

The symbol of the SS, Hitler’s Schutzstaffel, stands for terror and the murder of millions. The penniless graphic artist Walter Heck was given the job of designing the jagged, rune-like characters in 1929. The “sig” rune was rooted deep in the ideological cosmos of the Nazis and their supporters. They saw themselves as the descendants of the Teutons and declared the runes to be humanity’s original Germanic script. The symbol was meant to unite Heinrich Himmler’s “Black Order.” But did it escape their notice that it was originally of Semitic origin? In October 1945, the Allies passed a law banning the Nazi Party and all associated organizations, including the SS. The young Federal Republic even forbade all Nazi symbols. This documentary tells the gripping story of the SS symbol, from the Middle Ages to the present day.
