Odd Tinkering takes on the restoration of a Vietnam War-era trench art lighter from the early 1970s. The piece has suffered significant oxidation and rust damage over the decades. The restoration process begins with careful disassembly, during which a heavily corroded screw breaks and must be replaced. Using rust remover on most components and sandblasting on the fuel tank, the technician methodically removes decades of oxidation. After sanding to 2000 grit, attention turns to the links, which have lost their original blueing. These are carefully reheated with a torch and treated with oil to restore their finish. The remaining parts are polished and prepared for nickel plating, a technique the restorer demonstrates in detail. Through patience and skill, this neglected piece of history is transformed back to its former condition, showcasing both the craftsmanship of its original makers and the restoration expertise required to bring such artifacts back to life.

A meticulous restoration of a World War II German Daimon Telko Trio flashlight reveals the challenges of bringing vintage military equipment back to life. The flashlight arrived heavily rusted with missing components and holes that needed repair. The restorer documents the complete disassembly process, drilling out rivets that held the device together, then faces the obstacle of sourcing replacement rivets. Unable to find affordable period-correct rivets, custom tools are fabricated to hand-create brass tube rivets that closely match the originals. Using a rotary tool and careful metalwork, each rivet is shaped through a specialized funnel-forming technique before being hammered flat.
