Russia is one of the most diverse and by far the largest country in the world. Its immense nature has always fascinated people. There are more than one hundred nature reserves, national parks and biosphere reserves between the lowlands in the west and the Mountains of fire on Kamchatka in the east. Dedicated researchers and nature conservationists fight daily to preserve this treasure. Four of these spectacular regions are representative of Russia's hidden paradises. The westernmost tip of Russia is the exclave of the Curonian Spit. A narrow strip of land that juts into the Baltic Sea. The Spit is a popular resting place for migratory birds on their journeys to the breeding grounds in the far north and to the winter quarters in the south. It is therefore not surprising that the oldest ornithological research station in the world has been observing the migration of birds here for more than a hundred years. Today, the most diverse migratory birds are briefly caught in gigantic traps made of fishing nets, examined for their state of health and ringed. Among other things, the data obtained provide researchers with clear evidence of global climate change. In the Far East on Kamchatka lies Lake Kuril, a paradise for the world's largest brown bears. At the time of the salmon migration they find food in abundance here. Since a dedicated anti-poaching unit has about 500 bears in sight, the furry giants are safe. Previously, poachers have repeatedly hunted the brown bears and served a flourishing market for bear products in China. High in the north in a desert of ice, live the reindeer herds of the Nenets. For centuries, the ungulates and the nomadic people have been well adapted to the hostile conditions on the Jamal peninsula. But despite all this flexibility, climate change and gas production are rapidly changing the world of the Nenets and their animals. In the south, the powerful and wild Caucasus borders the country.
