Easter Island – or Rapa Nui – still is one of the most mysterious places on earth. Thousands of miles out in the Pacific Ocean, its first settlers are presumed to have set off from Polynesia. Once their island was an oasis of 16 million palm trees, its coast lined by hundreds of Moai, statues of several tons weight each. Then, suddenly, the forest vanished, the Moai were toppled. What had happened? Two German archaeologists put forth a stunning new explanation. Thanks to their research it’s now evident that the palm tree had been intentionally felled by the inhabitants of the island causing a dramatic ecological upheaval. Yet, life on Rapa Nui went on, thanks to the use of ingenious agricultural technology. Was it imported by a second wave of settlers from another civilization. There still are many questions on and around Rapa Nui.
