Font of Life,
Starting at Imbak Falls, wildlife photographer Cede Prudente together with boatman Rizal start their journey down Borneo’s longest river ­ the Kinabatangan. Cede is on a mission to photograph the varied wildlife along this river from source to sea. In this episode, we meet some modern day Dusun people, an ethnic group once notorious as headhunters. Now torn between traditional hunter/gatherer ways and contemporary agriculture, the old values and ways of life are being challenged. We also encounter some of Borneo’s most amazing wildlife, including the colugo, the draco flying lizard, the poisonous Scutigera and the Bornean Pygmy Elephant, who have recently come into conflict with the locals. Meeting the Wildlife Rescue Unit, we see how they’re mitigating this conflict as well as rehabilitating injured elephants caught in the fray back to good health.

Gift to the Earth,
Descending from the highlands, Wildlife Photographer Cede Prudente and boatman Rizal continue their journey down the Kinabatangan River. Cede checks out a trap set to capture the elusive Clouded Leopard. We then meet a man dedicated to rescuing Sun Bears from the illegal pet trade and repatriating them back into the wild. We witness the phenomenon of two million wrinkly bats leaving their cave for their nightly feed as well as the raptors waiting to prey them. It’s these same bats that a group trying to detect animal to human viruses are after, aiming to detect new viruses and decipher the mysteries of how pathogens such as HIV and ebola make the jump from wild animals to people. Cede also meets Rizal’s family and witnesses the duality of life along the river for the locals, where land clearing and agriculture are required to sustain a living.

Balancing the Scales,
Documenting the Kinabatangan river in Borneo from source to sea, acclaimed wildlife photographer Cede Prudente meets up with village elder Patti Arsah, one of Borneo’s Orang Sungai, or People of the River. We also meet his grandson, the last of his family keen in learning the traditional ways of his grandfather. Nearby, a desperate battle is underway to save remaining forest habitat and protect one of Borneo’s most endangered species ­ the orangutan ­ humankind’s closest genetic relative. Biologist Marc Ancranez works closely with local villagers, employing and educating them to help man and great ape co­exist. Down river, Conservationist Luke Evans is looking to capture a Saltwater Crocodile so he can attach a satellite tracker, mitigating the danger for humans along the river. Cede completes his once in a lifetime journey down the Kinabatangan River.

Originating in the hidden heart of Borneo, the Kinabatangan River winds its way for more than 560 kilometers – through soaring forests of fruit, past concealed limestone caves and across lowland riverine and mangrove forests – before feeding into the rich coral reefs of the Sulu Sea. We follow local wildlife photographer, Cede Prudente, as he captures the destruction, drama and diversity of life that the river supports in the hopes of raising awareness of the challenges facing the river system. Being used for trade, transport and communication for centuries, the Kinabatangan River is the lifeblood of the local people. But changing times have led to an increase in deforestation to allow for agricultural growth. In this series we meet the locals, conservationists and of course the animals along the way and explore the dynamic between modern life and animal conservation.
