With one son already having left home Clare struggles with the fact that 16-year old Matt wants his independence and prefers to go to France with his girl-friend's family than the traditional Lake District holiday with Clare and husband Rob.

Divorced from Debra following his adultery Liam lives with Anna but still sees his two little boys, though 15 year old daughter Jess blanks him.

20 year old Nathan is thrilled to start work at the local car factory but, despite excellent wages, he is employed on a non-union zero hours basis and the job is dull and demanding with the harsh foreman Roy requiring him to come in on a moment's notice.
