With their trumpet-like song, whooper swans herald the beginning of spring: At long last, the sun once again shines above the horizon and liberates the forest and water-rich landscapes of Russia’s North of the ice and darkness. Black Grouse go about courting, while brown bear mothers roam through the Taiga in search of last season’s cranberries. In Karelia, light has a very special meaning. It is said that, there are but two seasons here: the eight-month-long winter and the four-month-short summer. The first sunrays transform the waves of Lake Vodlozero into liquid gold. In the white nights of Midsummer, the sun never sets, causing life to pulsate even "at night". Russia experts Henry M. Mix and Axel Gebauer present a short summer full of life, through landscapes of water and light, so beautiful and pristine, as rarely seen in Europe.
